Emergency services have been forced to kill several crocodiles in order to recover the body of a young driver who crashed his car into the water at a popular Northern Territory fishing spot.
Police received reports on Thursday afternoon that a car carrying two people crashed into the water at Six Pack Creek Boat Ramp in Dundee Downs.
One person managed to get out of the car before it sank while the other remained trapped.
Police recovered the trapped man's body on Friday, with the crocodile risk cited as a major delay.
"This was a difficult recovery, and made more complicated due to the presence of saltwater crocodiles - a number of which were destroyed to ensure the safety of those involved in the recovery operation," Detective Senior Sergeant Brendan Lindner said.
Police have now formally identified the body as that of a 20-year-old Darwin man.
The other passenger was treated at Royal Darwin Hospital for minor injuries.
Circumstances surrounding the crash are still being investigated, but police believe alcohol was a factor.
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
