Police back digging on the moors for Ian Brady's victim Keith Bennett as skull found

Police are back digging on the moors for murder victim Keith Bennet.

The search has been launched after a skull has been found. The 12-year-old boy was snatched 58 years ago by Ian Brady and Myra Hindley and the case has never been resolved.

Now detectives are going to dig an area of land after human remains were found on Saddleworth Moor. Last night, Forensic anthropologists from Greater Manchester Police were examining potential samples of body tissue taken from the area.

Ian Brady and Myra Hindley murdered five children between 1963 and 1965. Their victims, Pauline Reade, 16, John Kilbride, 12, Keith Bennett, 12, Lesley Ann Downey, 10, and Edward Evans, 17, were all from Manchester. Bodies of the victims were found buried on Saddleworth Moor.

However Keith's remains were never found as his killers refused to disclose the location of his body. Brady and Hindley were jailed for life in 1966. Hindley died in 2002 in prison. Brady went on hunger strike in 1999 and, after several failed attempts to be moved to a prison, he died in Ashworth Hospital in May 2017, aged 79.

Keith was snatched on June 16 1964 after he left home to visit his grandmother; Lesley Ann was lured away from a funfair on Boxing Day 1964; and Edward was killed in October 1965, the Mirror reports.

The couple later took snapshots of themselves standing over the graves. The bodies of John, Lesley Ann and Edward were discovered at the time of the latest killing, in October 1965.

Edward, who was battered to death with an axe, was found in an upstairs room at Brady and Handle's Manchester home. Lesley Ann's body was discovered on Saddleworth Moor on October 16 after a tip-off to the police by a 12-year-old neighbour who had been there with the couple. Photos of the moor found at the house also led to the discovery of John Kilbride there later that month.
