"Sion Mills is a quaint, quiet village and events such as this morning are very few and far between," he added.

"It has really shaken the local community and residents. But I do know think that this is a one-off and rare incident and the PSNI has been doing a lot of good work locally in Sion Mills.

"There has been a lot of anti-social behaviour and most of that is being addressed by the local community police team."

Alliance Omagh Cllr Stephen Donnelly added: "Deeply concerned by the reports emerging from Sion Mills. A peaceful, quiet village where such violent behaviour is rare and unwelcome.

"I wish a swift recovery to all injured and would urge the local community to give their full assistance to the PSNI."
