Police at scene after body found in city centre flats

The body of a man was discovered at a home in the Georgian Quarter .

The 51-year-old was pronounced dead after emergency services were made aware of concerns for his safety.

The death sparked grief in the area, with neighbours describing it as "very, very sad".

Merseyside Police said the force was called to Bedford Street South by paramedics, with officers arriving at around 9.15pm on Friday.

Those in the area said an ambulance had been outside a property split into flats and on the junction with Egerton Street before the arrival of police.

They described several police vehicles later attending the scene, and forensics officers examining the property and taking photographs.

One woman said: "There were lots of police, including two forensics vans.

"They were using floodlights and taking pictures of the scene.

"Whatever’s happened it’s very, very sad. So close to Christmas as well."

Others recalled seeing what they believed to have been detectives discussing the situation on the street corner.

A spokeswoman for Merseyside Police said: "The death is currently being treated as unexplained, but is not thought to be suspicious at this time.

"A Home Office Post Mortem has taken place and the results have been withheld pending toxicology reports.

"He has been formally identified and his next of kin have been informed."
