Police 'ask domestic violence victim to pick up thug partner from cell'

A domestic assault victim claims police asked her to pick up her alleged assailant from the police station following his arrest.

Paula McNeill, from Paisley, Scotland, has filed an official complaint to the police, claiming an officer from the Isle of Mull told her to collect her boyfriend, David Kerr, 35, as they wanted him 'off the island'.

The 40-year-old woman said Kerr had allegedly assaulted her while they were on Mull for a Valentine's trip last year, according to Daily Record .

She claimed to have suffered bruises and cuts after Kerr hit her head repeatedly off the steering wheel of her car and beat her.

It's said Kerr started 'ranting and raving', accusing her of looking at another man before returning to the hotel.

She said: “He just kept battering my head off the steering wheel. I could taste blood and feel blood on my face from a cut above my eyebrow.

"I have the scar and there was bruising behind my ear."

A hotel worker called the police after hearing Kerr wrecking in the room and Paula screaming, but Paula refused to make a statement in front of Kerr.

The police then took Kerr away for interrogation, it is reported.

Paula said: "There was clearly a lack of understanding from police of how women react when they are in an abusive relationship."

Kerr was previously convicted for seriously assault his former partner, Amy Clarkes, in Wales, after he strangled her until her passed out.

A few hours after the police took Kerr to Mull police station, Paula said she received a call from the officers and was asked to bring Kerr's medication and pick him up.

Having said she had a flat tyre, the officers brought Kerr to the hotel to collect his belongings and allowed him to approach Paula and give her a cuddle.

She then claimed Kerr asked her about the injuries in front of the officers, who later gave her a form to sign when he asked for her bank card.

Paula was shocked and said: "It was appalling that they let him near me, even if I had denied that he had hit me.

"Even if an officer had tried to understand the hold I was under, perhaps I would have felt confident enough to co-operate. But I felt abandoned."

Kerr assaulted her months after they returned home in Paisley and Paula reported to police.

He was charged with offences including pushing her head into his lap, twisting her arm and preventing her from leaving her home.

Kerr pled guilty to the offences happened in Paisley but the court accepted not guilty pleas on all the charges relating to alleged assaults and criminal damage in Mull.

At Paisley Sheriff Court, Kerr was handed a community payback order, which not being in Paula's vicinity 'other than inadvertently', as well as compulsory attendance at a Relate Choose to Change programme.

He was also ordered to attend alcohol counselling and 275 hours of unpaid community work.

Paula said: "I am complaining because I don’t want that happening to other women. That’s how women end up being killed.

"David is a dangerous man but his violence has not been taken seriously. Will someone have to die before something is done about him?"

Police Scotland said it would not be appropriate to comment on Paula’s complaint.
