A 17-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence before the Carabao Cup semi-final at Wembley last night.

The Metropolitan police confirmed the teenager had been arrested at the venue 20 minutes before the match kicked off and was being held at a police station in north London. Concern had been high ahead of the match over the possibility of antisemitic chants being directed by Chelsea fans.

The Met said in a statement: “A 17-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence at the Tottenham vs Chelsea match at Wembley Stadium, at around 1940hrs on Tuesday, 8 January.” The police did not specify whether the boy they arrested was a fan of either team, nor did they give details of the offence for which he was arrested.
