EARLIER REPORT:
Two people have been arrested over the death of a 56-year-old man, who was found with a fatal stab wound nine days ago.
Christopher Ward died in John Hunter Hospital last Tuesday after he went to a Broadmeadow premises with a stab wound to his stomach on the night of March 7.
Strike Force Mailey was established last week after post mortem results led police to believe Mr Ward's death was a case of homicide.
Police said officers arrested a 47-year-old man and a 47-year-old woman outside a premises on Honeysuckle Drive in Newcastle about 3pm on Tuesday.
Both have been taken to Newcastle Police Station where they are assisting police with their inquiries.
No-one had been charged over Mr Ward's death at the time of publication.
It comes after police appealed for information to help piece together the final hours before Mr Ward appeared seriously injured at Broadmeadow Road - near the Nine Ways area - at about 8.20pm.
Newcastle police commander Detective Superintendent Humphrey said last week it was not clear where the 56-year-old suffered the stab wound.
"We're particularly interested in tracking the movements of the deceased man, Christopher Ward, on that Sunday afternoon between the hours of 7pm and 8.30pm," he said during an appeal for information last Friday.
"We've had some success in tracking his movements from CCTV from Marketown and other areas, but we are particularly interested if anyone was driving through the Nine Ways area through that period ... if they have any dash cam material that they can contact police."
