West Ham are facing more questions over crowd control measures at the London Stadium after fans clashed following their 1-1 Premier League draw against Middlesbrough.

Fans were seen confronting each other inside the ground then fighting outside it in the Olympic Park, with stewards and police intervening to separate rival groups.

A Metropolitan police statement confirmed three men had been detained, adding: “Two men were arrested on suspicion of affray and the third was arrested on suspicion of assaulting a police officer. All three currently remain in custody pending further enquires. During the match officers were also deployed inside the stadium following a separate disturbance. The matter was quickly dealt with and no arrests were made.”

Police said no injuries were reported, and blamed “a small minority intent on causing disruption”.

The ugly scenes follow previous incidents of disorder at West Ham’s new ground, including the ejection of 10 fans during the 4-2 defeat to Watford last month. Supporters have complained about stewarding and segregation, and chanted “we should have stayed at the Boleyn” during Saturday’s match.

West Ham said they would investigate the latest incidents, adding: “This behaviour has no place in football, and West Ham United, in cooperation with all London Stadium stakeholders, will continue to operate a zero tolerance policy … The vast majority of supporters have behaved impeccably, and we will not let the acts of mindless individuals tarnish their reputation.”
