Police charge man over sexual assault after offering $500k reward

The man charged with raping and assaulting a new mother in North Melbourne five years ago has been identified as Zynal Javid Khan.

The 34-year-old Reservoir man was arrested just after 1:00pm on Wednesday, and has been charged with one count of rape and one count of intentionally causing serious injury.

He faced an out-of-session hearing at the Melbourne Magistrates' Court tonight where no application for bail was made.

Mr Khan is due to face court again this morning.

A 37-year-old woman was also arrested at the same Reservoir property.

Police earlier this month offered the reward for information in relation to the incident on June 30, 2013.

They said a woman, then 22, was walking home from the city along King Street when a man grabbed her from behind and dragged her down a lane.

Police said the woman was punched in the head several times, knocked to the ground and kicked in the head before she was sexually assaulted.
