Police charge man over fatal New Town crash

A man charged with manslaughter over a crash that killed a woman in New Town last month will appear in court again next month.

Vanessa Hayward, 42, was killed in the two-car crash at Pirie and Roope streets about 9:00pm on June 22.

Zach Muir Bennett, 25, was charged with manslaughter overnight and appeared in the Magistrates Court in Hobart briefly today.

Police alleged he failed to take reasonable precaution and care to avoid danger to human life.

Muir Bennett is also charged with driving at an excessive speed in all the conditions, exceeding the designated speed limit, failing to take reasonable precautions to avoid a collision, failing to keep a proper lookout, and failing to obey a designated stop sign.

There were no pleas, and no application for bail.

Police arrested Muir Bennett, from Gagebrook, about 2:00pm on Monday in New Town after receiving information from a member of the public.

In a statement, Detective Inspector Ian Whish-Wilson thanked the public for providing information which led to the man's arrest.

"We appreciate the community's support in helping us being able to provide some sort of closure for the woman's family and loved ones," he said.
