Police exonerate 76yo man over alleged hit-and-run in northern Victoria

Police believe the man was walking in the middle of the road at the time.

Police in northern Victoria have said they find it "very hard to believe" a driver did not know they had hit a man walking down the middle of a road whose body was later found by a passerby.

The 20-year-old Sunshine man was found dead by a passing motorist on Murchison-Violet Town Road near Murchison about 3:10am (AEDT).

Police said they had exonerated a 76-year-old Tatura man after interviewing him today.

Police believe the pedestrian had been making his way from a local caravan park to his home at another caravan park when he was hit by the car.

Detective Sergeant Stephen Hill from the Major Collision Investigation Unit said he believed the man had been walking in the middle of the road when he was struck.

Police were checking to see if there was any CCTV in the area that might show the incident.

"I find it very hard to believe that a person who struck another person while driving a vehicle wasn't aware of it," Detective Sergeant Hill said.

"People driving on our roads should be paying attention and I'd like to think if they saw this happen they would pull over and help."

Murchison East mother Chantelle Harrison told the ABC she did not hear anything unusual overnight, but the experience had rattled her.

"It's shocking, you don't like to see that, not near your home," she said.

"It's not very common [this type of activity], I just saw a couple of cop cars and that's it."

Police are urging anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
