Police charge man over alleged crime spree after coaxing him from roof

Police say a car thief crashed into this parked vehicle in Clarence Gardens

A man has been charged after being coaxed down from a roof following a two-hour alleged crime spree through Adelaide's inner south this morning.

Police alleged the 31-year-old stole a Ford Laser from Gepps Cross and crashed it into a parked Ford Falcon on Caulfield Avenue, Clarence Gardens, just after 3:00am.

They said a witness offered help, but the man threatened him with a knife, assaulted him and then drove off in his car, a Toyota Starlet.

The alleged victim, in his 50s, received facial injuries and was taken by ambulance to the Flinders Medical Centre.

Police spotted the Starlet in Edwardstown just before 4:00am but it was lost in the back streets.

They were later called to Forestville when a home owner reported someone was in their front yard.

The man was then seen jumping fences before climbing onto the roof of a house.

After 90 minutes of negotiations, officers convinced him to come down and he was arrested.

The man was charged with aggravated robbery, serious criminal trespass, illegal use of a motor vehicle and unlawfully being on premises.

He was refused bail and will appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court tomorrow.

Mauricio Herrera, whose car was crashed into, said it was "pretty unsettling".

"Really, this is a pretty good neighbourhood, so for that to happen is pretty weird I guess — and stressful," he said.

Annalyce Baird, who was staying at her partner's grandmother's house on Caulfield Avenue, said she heard the crash in the middle of the night.

"We saw the man stomping around out here and decided not to come out," she said.

"Thank God we didn't after hearing he had a knife and everything like that, but, yeah, a bit scary."
