A Melbourne man has been charged with murder over the death of a 78-year-old woman in the city's south-east.

Judy Bednar's body was found inside her Chelsea home during a police welfare check on Sunday morning.

Chelsea man Thomas Bednar, 53, faced the Melbourne Magistrates' Court late on Monday after being charged with the murder hours earlier.

Documents released by the court allege Mr Bednar murdered Ms Bednar in her home between Wednesday May 12 and Saturday May 15.

Mr Bednar was remanded in custody until his committal hearing on October 4.

It is his first time in custody, the court heard.

The court heard DNA evidence would be sent for testing and devices would be sent to the e-crimes unit for analysis.

The prosecution requested homicide detectives be given 14 weeks to prepare the brief of evidence, as opposed to the standard six-week period, to allow for a medical report to return.

Mr Bednar was not withdrawing from drugs, the court heard. He was prescribed 20 milligrams of the anti-insomnia drug temazepam.
