Police arrest man on suspicion of possessing a firearm after helicopter search near Monmouth

Police have arrested a man on suspicion of possessing a firearm following a helicopter search around Monmouth on Sunday.

Gwent Police received a report of a man making threats to others at an address in Rolls Avenue, Monmouth, at around 10.15am on Sunday, May 24.

Officers from the local neighbourhood team were involved in an extensive search of the area, while residents reported seeing a police helicopter above Monmouth on Sunday morning.

Gwent Police confirmed they were assisted by the National Police Air Service (NPAS) in their search for a man, who was located near to the old Monmouth viaduct in Redbrook.

A police spokesperson said: "Following a peaceful resolution, we have arrested a 27-year-old man from the Monmouth area on suspicion of burglary, criminal damage, making threats to others, possession of a firearm in a public place, possession of an offensive weapon in a public place and violence to secure entry.

"He is currently in police custody and no injuries were sustained by anyone during the incident."

It comes after a police helicopter was also spotted in the area on Saturday morning. A spokesman from Gwent Police said the NPAS assisted them in a search for a missing man in Monmouth on Saturday morning at around 7.20am.

He was later located safe and well, and the incidents are not related.

Residents also reported seeing an NPAS crew in the area on Saturday evening, just across the Welsh border.

According to Gloucestershire Live, crews were assisting police in Cinderford, Forest of Dean, in relation to a separate incident.

A Gloucestershire Constabulary spokesman said: “There's been a large police presence in Cinderford today [Saturday] after we received a report a group of people had been arguing and a firearm was seen.

“Officers attended, including armed police along with the support of the National Police Air Service, and four people have been arrested.

“Searches are taking place and police remain in the area at this time.”

Police issued a subsequent statement on Saturday evening, which said: "This evening there are three men and one woman aged between 24 and 30 in police custody having been arrested in connection with the incident."
