Police arrest man in connection with violent Griffith Park attack

Nov. 04--Los Angeles police have made an arrest in connection with a violent attack Monday in Griffith Park that left a person in critical condition, officials said.

The suspect -- who police did not immediately identify -- was arrested about 7:30 p.m. Monday by officers in the LAPD's Hollywood division, said Sgt. Wayne Guillary.

Officers there saw a person matching the description of the suspect in an assault on a Griffith Park hiking trail earlier in the day, Guillary said.

The victim, who was found by hikers about 2:30 p.m., remains in intensive care at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, police said. He was airlifted out of an area near the 2200 block of Fern Dell Drive.

The attack is being investigated as an assault with a deadly weapon, LAPD Officer Jane Kim said. She declined to specify what type of weapon investigators believe was used in the attack.

The hikers who found the victim and called 911 told KTLA that his face was bloody. Jared Cooper of the Los Angeles Fire Department told the TV station that the man was in his 30s and had life-threatening injuries.

In May, two women reported being attacked in separate incidents at the popular hiking destination. One woman was hospitalized in an attempted robbery that turned into a physical altercation. Another woman, who fought off an attempted sexual assault, was not injured.
