Police investigate woman's death near home gutted by fire

Officer is about 45 kilometres from Melbourne's CBD.

Tributes and flowers are being left for a woman who died outside a burning home in Melbourne's outer south-east this morning.

Police were called to the suburb of Officer just before 10:00am, when they received reports a woman was injured and there was a house fire nearby.

The woman, aged in her 50s, who is yet to be identified, died at the scene.

Witnesses reported four tradesmen attempted to resuscitate her, applying CPR in the burning home's front yard.

Community members have today visited the crime scene, laying flowers and tributes to the woman at the edge of the police cordon.

A man was arrested at the time but has since been released, Victoria Police said in a statement.

"The man initially assisting police with their inquiries, for matters not directly related to the death of the woman, has now been released without charge," police said.

"Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of a woman in Officer this morning.

"The exact circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear at this stage and detectives will await the results of a post-mortem."

Footage from the scene showed one of a series of units had been blackened and gutted by fire.

A man could be seen sitting on a nature strip with his hands restrained behind his back as police officers stood nearby.

"The exact circumstances surrounding the incident are unclear however it's believed the parties are known to one another," Victoria Police said.

Homicide detectives were at the scene, which is near the intersection of Harmony Place and Bridge Road.
