Police arrest fugitive on the run for 17 years after using drones to find him

A fugitive on the run for 17 years has been arrested by police after they used drones to find his mountain hideout.

Song Jiang, 63, had been jailed for trafficking women and children, but managed to escape a prison camp in 2002.

Drone footage revealed he had been living in a tiny cave in the secluded hillside for years.

Police received a tip off about the man's location in early September, they said.

They started searching in the mountains between Song's hometown in Yunnan, southwest China.

After searches failed to find anything, authorities sent drones to help the officers.

The drones spotted a blue steel tile on a steep cliff and some household rubbish nearby, which led to the identification of the cave.

Jiang was found in his tiny hideout on September 19, police said.

They also added the man had been living in seclusion for so long that he struggled to communicate with officers.

The BBC reports Jiang has been sent back to jail following the arrest.

Chinese media said the fugitive used plastic bottles to get drinking water from a river and gathered dry tree branches to make fire.

His cave measured less than 21 square feet in size, NBC News reports.

Footage released by the police showed blackened cooking pots inside the cave and other old household items.

Officers also said Jiang's lifestyle has "devastated" his body.
