PANAJI: Pernem police on Tuesday arrested Ganesh Virnodkar, a resident of Banda, in connection with the murder of Shreya Shailesh Madkholkar.
Madkholkar, 34, a native of Sawantwadi, Maharashtra, was found dead at a guesthouse at Arambol on May 16.
Virnodkar and Madkholkar were friends. Police said the accused, along with Madkholkar, had come to Goa on May 9 and checked into the guesthouse.
As per the complaint filed by the guesthouse caretaker, Mangesh Prajapati, 27, he went to check the room on May 16 as a foul odour was emanating from it. The door was locked from the outside.
When he unlocked the door and entered, he saw the badly decomposed body of Madkholkar lying on the ground in a pool of blood.
Pernem police inspector Vikram Naik said that based on the complaint, a first information report was registered under Section 302 (murder) of the IPC. A police team was sent to Banda and Virnodkar was arrested.
During the interrogation, Virnodkar told police that on May 10, Madkholkar started complaining of stomach pain and began vomiting. Then, on May 13, Virnodkar locked the room and left the guesthouse. Police said the accused has been unable to explain why he did not take Madkholkar to a doctor after she complained of being sick.
Police said a postmortem was conducted at the Goa Medical College. The viscera samples have been reserved and the cause of death is also reserved
The victim is survived by her husband and three children.
