Police are using drones to patrol a beauty spot plagued by anti-social behaviour - and teenagers breaking lockdown rules

Drones are being used to patrol a Tameside beauty spot following reports of anti-social behaviour and young people flouting lockdown rules.

Werneth Low has always been popular during the sunny months, but in recent weeks police have seen an increase in calls about drinking and drug use, speeding cars, noise and littering.

There have also been problems at Dukinfield Golf Club and Werneth Low Golf Club, with damage being caused to the courses and youths causing 'an inconvenience' to golfers.

Sgt Paul Suddons said the easing of lockdown restrictions - and the hot weather - have made things worse.

"We are seeing large gatherings of younger people in their teens and early 20s," he said.

"Most of the time they are actually adhering to distancing rules, keeping away from each other, but the groups are too big.

"They are also leaving behind rubbish, drinking, and there is evidence of drug use.

"We've also had complaints from those living nearby about noise and speeding cars so we took the mobile police station up there yesterday and set up a speed camera.

"Officers are also being supported by the Drone Unit to help patrol the area from above."

Sgt Suddons said that he also has concerns about the use of disposable barbecues on Werneth Low.

He added: "There was no one doing it yesterday but it is worrying - we know what can happen and the damage they can do."

Police are also working with Tameside Council on the littering problems.

GMP Tameside South & West posted an update on its Facebook page on Wednesday afternoon.

It wrote: "GMP and TMBC are taking all issues identified very seriously.

"We are doing a walk around today to identify further hotspot areas and take enforcement if necessary."
