Police are trying to trace the family of a man who lay dead in his home for at least a week

Police are trying to contact the family of a heavy drinker from Gorton who lay dead in his home for at least a week.

Neighbours became concerned for Kevin Griffiths, 66, when they noticed the lights at his home were not coming on in the evenings and they also spotted flies coming from the property.

One resident stuck tape across the front door and door frame on Thursday of last week and when he noticed it was still there on Friday he called police.

Officers broke in and discovered Mr Griffiths, who lived alone, was dead inside the property on Deerfold Close.

Detectives have concluded there was no foul play involved in his death.

However, officers have not been able to trace any family.

The neighbour who alerted police, who declined to be named, paid tribute to 'Kev'.

He said: "He was a nice guy. He had time for anyone. He was old school, a proper Gorton boy."

Asked if he thought it was a drink-related death, he said: "Definitely, yes."

Mr Griffiths would sit on a bench opposite a nearby Tesco and drink cider with a pal, he said, adding that the death was one of five he had known in the eleven years he had lived on Deerfold Close.

"I call it Death Row," he said.

Another neighbour said: "I think he was dead for at least a week. He was a drinker but he was no problem. He lived on his own. He didn't shout. He didn't bring any trouble back. When he was drinking, he was actually quite shy, as though he as quite apologetic about the way he was."

A statement from Greater Manchester Police said: "Kevin Griffiths, 66, passed away at his home address on Deerfold Close in Gorton on Friday 13 November 2020. There are no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death.

"It is believed he may have a brother called Michael Griffiths."

Anyone with information about Kevin's next of kin is asked to contact the Police Coroner’s Office in Manchester on 0161 856 6069.
