Police are targeting cyclists 'not adhering to road rules' in Manchester city centre today

Police have been targeting cyclists in Manchester city centre this morning.

Traffic PSCOs have been stationed along Oxford Road today (Wednesday) to stop bike users 'not adhering to the rules of the road.'

A number of cyclists were reportedly stopped and issued warnings about the dangers of running red lights.

Under the Road Traffic Act all road users including cyclists can face an on-the-spot fine of £30 for failing to stop at a red traffic light.

Oxford Road is used by thousands of students and commuters every day and has a cycle lane running the entire length.

GMP's traffic division tweeted: "Officers from the #TransportUnit worked alongside Traffic PCSOs this morning in the City Centre targeting issues with cyclists not adhering to the rules of the road.

"Number of cyclists advised regarding dangers of red lights. #besafebeseen."

The targeted action was praised by some, with others raising the question of whether drivers of cars would be given the same treatment.

One person tweeted: "Full support of this, the lanes are decent and should be used properly.

"But do you do this kind of action in city centre for cars any more? I know you do them in other areas?"

Another wrote: "About time."
