Police are searching for a missing five-month-old baby

Update 10.30pm: The missing five-month-old baby boy has been found and a 35-year-old man has been arrested.

A missing five-month-old baby has sparked a major UK-wide police search.

Police officers are appealing for a man called James Dempsey, who is known to the child's mother but is not the child's father, to come forward.

Officers have turned to the public for their help to find Dempsey who was last seen driving a Silver Vauxhall Astra just before 1am today.

Officers are urging anyone who may have any information to get in touch.

Birmingham Live reported that the baby had gone missing from Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands.

Police say he may still be in Birmingham but may have gone anywhere in the UK and are appealing to the public.

The family of the little boy are anxious and worried and just want him home safe, police say.

Dempsey is thought to have been driving a Silver Vauxhall Astra, with the registration plate NH05 OWP and this vehicle was last seen on the A45 towards Coventry, just before 1am today.

Detective Chief Inspector Ian Ingram, from Force CID, who is leading the search, said: “I am concerned for the safety of this baby and am appealing for help to find him.

“His family are anxious and worried about the baby boy and just want him home safe and well.

“I am appealing directly to James to contact us or the baby’s family so we can arrange for him to be reunited with his mother - or to take the baby to a place of safety, such as a hospital.

"They could still be in the Birmingham area but it’s also possible that they’ve travelled elsewhere in the country which is why we are appealing to the public for help.

“I would ask everyone who is out and about this evening- wherever you are - to please keep your eyes peeled for Dempsey.

“We also need anyone who has seen the Silver Astra, registration number NH05OWP since yesterday or knows where it is now to call us as soon as possible.

“If you’re on social media, please share our appeal so that it is seen far and wide because it’s our best chance to locate the baby and to ensure he is safe."
