Police are patrolling a beauty spot to prevent a planned illegal rave from taking place tonight

Police are patrolling a beauty spot to prevent a planned illegal rave from taking place tonight.

GMP shared photos showing officers stationed at Dovestones on Saturday, in order to stop a 'large scale' gathering going ahead.

Yesterday the force closed entry points to the site after discovering a "rave-style event with hundreds of attendees" was being planned for the area near Dovestones this weekend.

Many of the access routes to the reservoir were cordoned off on Friday evening.

Sharing photos of vans at the site on Saturday evening, GMP Oldham wrote: "GMP officers are patrolling Dovestones to prevent a large-scale planned illegal gathering from taking place."

Earlier this week GMP said they were working with United Utilities, which manages the Dovestone Reservoir and Oldham Council to prevent access in some areas, apologising to the public for the disruption but insisting it was necessary to prevent the event.

It comes as plans to foil a planned 'outdoor party' at Boggart Hole Clough in north Manchester next weekend were also revealed.

Police chiefs have urged people not to attend either event, highlighting the dangers of gatherings during the pandemic and pointing out previous events such as those at Daisy Nook Country Park in Oldham and on an industrial estate in Carrington, Trafford, have seen violence and drug mis-use.

Social distancing rules remain in place even though lockdown has eased and people are required to keep a minimum one metre away from anyone not in their household or bubble.

People are still urged to stay two metres apart where possible.

Mass gatherings remain a breach of lockdown rules.

Police are asking anyone with information to call 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111
