Police are hunting for a driver who ploughed into barriers on the M61-East Lancs slip road and fled

A driver ploughed into barriers on an M61 slip road and fled, sparking long delays during rush hour.

The smash took place on the Southbound exit slip road connecting the M61 to the A580 East Lancashire Road at 4.40am this morning.

Officers have sealed off the road, as well as the link road from the Kearsley Spur, while investigation work takes place.

The driver of the silver Chevrolet Captiva abandoned the damaged vehicle in the middle of the carriageway and fled from the scene.

Greater Manchester Police are searching for the driver and said there are no reported injuries at this time.

The closures are causing tailbacks up to junction five, for Westhoughton, on the M61 as well as queuing traffic along the A666 St Peter's Way, going to beyond the turn off for Moses Gate.

Traffic travelling through Little Hulton, Walkden, Farnworth and Kearsley are also affected and drivers are being advised to find alternative routes.

PC Phil Raymond, of GMP’s Salford district, said: “We are carrying out enquiries at the scene to trace the driver and search the immediate area for any potential casualties.

“We are working to get traffic moving as soon as possible and appreciate your patience at this time.”

Anyone with information should contact police on 0161 856 6108. Reports can be made anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
