Three men, armed with weapons including a machete and a knife, had entered the shop and a female member of staff on duty activated the alarm and locked herself in a back room.

A spokesperson for the force added that there were no customers at the time.

Two of the men jumped over the counter and filled a large bag with cigarettes before all three left the scene in a black Volkswagen Lupo.

The force has said: “Detectives from Leeds District CID are continuing to carry out enquiries today and would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the incident or saw the men or the car used in the vicinity.

“Anyone with information is asked to contact officers via 101 quoting crime reference 13210097870 or online via www.westyorkshire.police.uk/101livechat

"Information can also be given anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
