Police appeal to people who went to Stereophonics in Swansea after driver hit concert-goer

A man has described how he was left bruised and concussed after being hit by a car while walking home from the Stereophonics concert in Singleton Park.

At just after 1am on Sunday, July 14, Mark Jones, 46, from Llanelli , was crossing Sketty Road at its junction with Bernard Street in Uplands , Swansea , when he was struck by a vehicle.

Police are now appealing for information on the collision, which Mr Jones said had affected his concentration and memory.

He was not aware of the driver stopping or talking to him following the incident.

“The car came out of a junction and just hit me, I wasn’t far away from the pavement," said Mr Jones.

He said he was hit on his left side and thrown to the ground where he struck his head.

“That bang and the screams of other people around, that’s what's in my head.

“I had concussion, I was still in shock."

The fall left him with severe bruising to his arms, legs and feet.

There were several eyewitnesses to the incident, but no ambulance was called at the time, he added.

According to Mr Jones, he tried to report the incident to South Wales Police officers who were patrolling the Uplands area, and was told they were aware of it but were “too busy”,

He tried to inform police again using 101 on Friday and Saturday, when it was officially logged as a priority.

Mr Jones was diagnosed with concussion when he sought medical help on Wednesday, having suffered with nausea and vomiting since the incident.

As a self-employed person, he claimed the effects of the concussion and other injuries had impacted on his business, Bzams Bed’z and Mattresses in Llanelli.

“I can’t deal with customers properly, I’m losing my communication, forgetting some things I wouldn’t normally forget. I’m not 100%.

“This last week has been really hard mentally,” he said.

Last week, Mr Jones returned to the scene of the incident and knocked on doors to ask if anyone living in the area had seen or heard anything on the night.

“In a way, I’m lucky, but I don’t want this to happen to anyone else," he added.

A South Wales Police spokesperson said: “Police in Swansea are investigating a report of a road traffic collision between a 46-year-old male pedestrian and a grey coloured VW Golf which was reported at around 5.30pm on Saturday 20th July.

“The collision took place on Bernard Street, Swansea, following the Stereophonics concert which happened in the city on Saturday 13th July.

“Officers are appealing for any witnesses to the incident to contact South Wales Police on 101, quoting reference number 1900265045.”
