Police appeal to 'humanity' of bikie gang to solve fatal shooting

Homicide detectives have made a direct appeal to members of the Comancheros bikie gang to come forward over the murder of a 22-year-old man in Melbourne's south-east, as they conduct controlled burns along the Great Ocean Road to try to uncover evidence.

Several gunmen opened fire on Muhamed Yucel last May as he left a garage in Keysborough after playing computer games with six friends.

Two of his friends were injured.

Police believe it was a case of mistaken identity and have linked it to the outlaw motorcycle gang [OMCG].

Detective Inspector Tim Day from the homicide squad called on members of the Comancheros to contact them with information.

"We know that organised crime exists, we know what OMCGs do and what their modus operandi is," he said.

"We know that sometimes members of those groups cross the line — sometimes it's sanctioned, sometimes it's not. There are going to be members within those groups that even they believe this has crossed the line.

"I know it's a long bow and it may well be somewhat optimistic, but I appeal to the humanity of those people.

"They understand this has crossed the line, it's resulted in the death of a young man who was totally innocent, if they have any conscious at all they need to think about their own position."

Gun discovery leads to Great Ocean Road search

Police revealed they found the gun used to kill Mr Yucel at Eastern View beach near Lorne along the Great Ocean Road.

Half a hectare of grassland was burnt along the coast in a bid to uncover more evidence.

Detective Inspector Day called for anyone who may have picked something up along the beach or the scrub to contact them.

"It could be something innocuous but until we know what it is, we may not be able to make a link and see if it's involved," he said.

He said the weapon was dumped in grassland from a grey Corolla sometime just after the shooting.

Last month Mr Yucel's family made a public plea for information about his death.

His uncle said the death of the young man they called 'Mo' had torn them to shreds.
