Police appeal over painting worth £3,000 stolen from Edinburgh home

Police have launched an appeal for information after a painting by a Scottish artist renowned for his depiction of American president George Washington was stolen from a home in the city centre.

The work by John Faed went missing from the residential property in January and is thought to be worth up to £3,000.

The artist’s ‘Portrait of George Washington taking the Salute at Trenton’ was used to illustrate an article about the first president of the United States in the popular Magazine of American History in 1880.

Faed also gained notoriety for his depictions of Sir Isaac Newton and William Shakespeare.

Hundreds of his works are now displayed at the Royal Scottish Academy, while around 20 are located in the Royal Academy in London.
