Police appeal for witnesses as man tragically dies after being hit by train in Fife

Transport cops are appealing for witnesses after a man was hit by a train and died in Fife.

Police were scrambled to Burntisland railway station yesterday (January 24) evening to reports of a casualty on the tracks.

Paramedics also raced to the scene and pronounced the man dead. The incident is not being treated as suspicious but police are trying to establish what happened.

Train travellers were last night told to expect delays on the Edinburgh to Fife line after the tragedy at 6.45pm.

A spokesperson for British Transport Police said: "The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file is being prepared for the procurator fiscal.

"Officers are appealing to anyone that was at the station, at or around the time, or anyone with information, to contact BTP by texting 61016 or calling 0800 40 50 40 quoting reference 297 of 24/01/21.

Alternatively, Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Last night Scotrail released a statement which read:" "Sadly, a person has been struck by a train between Inverkeithing and Kirkcaldy. The line has been closed between these stations in both directions.

"We're working closely with @NetworkRailScot and the emergency services. Services to/from Fife will be diverted via Cowdenbeath where possible."
