Police appeal for information about elderly Wirral man who vanished

Merseyside Police is appealing for information about an elderly man who vanished from his Wirral home earlier this month.

Gianpiero Bonifazi - known as 'Piero' - was last seen at his Banks Road home in West Kirby on Saturday, August 7.

The 'chatty' 69-year-old, who sold the Big Issue outside Morrisons, is thought to have left his home on Sunday, August 8, leaving behind his clothes and toothbrush.

He has links with Walthamstow in London, and with Norfolk, Devon, Kent and Cornwall.

Gianpiero's friend of nine years, Chris Hazlehurst, 74, described him as a gentle and caring man who always has a story to tell. Gianpiero man has not responded to her attempts to contact him.

Speaking of her concern for her friend, Chris told the ECHO : "I'm feeling quite unnerved by it, because he has done this sort of thing before. But normally he will respond to me within a few days."

His landlord Wendy is the last person known to see Gianpiero. She said she is 'sad' and would like the man, who is originally from Rome, to be found.

Speaking to the ECHO following Facebook appeals earlier this month, Wendy said: "It's just a very anxious time, isn't it? I just feel frustrated really, because I feel like we're getting nowhere."

A Merseyside Police spokesperson said: "69-year-old Gianpiero was last seen at his home in Banks Road earlier this month and extensive enquiries are ongoing.

"He is white, Italian, 5ft 8in tall, of medium build, bald, and wears glasses and usually baseball cap. He is known as a registered Big Issue seller.

"Gianpiero also has links to Walthamstow in London, Norfolk, Kent and Devon and Cornwall."
