Police appeal for hero who protected women from 'intoxicated' man on London high street to step forward

Police are appealing for a hero witness who stepped in to protect a group of women being harassed on a London high street to come forward.

Officers were called at around 8am on Wednesday, January 14, to reports that a man had attempted to rob and sexually assault three women on Camden High Street.

The witness put his “safety on the line” by placing himself between the three women and the “intoxicated” man to ensure they were safe, the Metropolitan Police said.

His heroic actions were only discovered when police reviewed CCTV footage after speaking to the women, as part of their investigation into the incident.

Now, police are appealing for the witness to come forward, as officers believe he may be able to assist them in their investigation.

The witness was spotted on CCTV (Met Police)

The man is described as white with a short brown beard. He is of average build and was wearing a light cream jacket, a green rucksack, dark trousers and brown shoes.

He also had on a distinctive red beanie hat with a yellow logo.

He stepped in to help just outside Miniso, a shop at the junction of Camden High Street and Inverness Street.

“This man saw three women being subjected to attention from an intoxicated man that was clearly unwanted,” Sergeant Max Pennington said.

“He could have kept on walking, but instead he repeatedly placed himself between the women and the man, putting his safety on the line to do so.

“He didn’t just stop to help, he stayed until he knew the women were safe. He should be proud of his actions.

“We want to thank him for his heroic actions but also believe he is a key witness who has important information which could assist with our investigation.

“If he sees this, I’d urge him to come forward. If anyone else sees this and knows his identity, please get in touch with us or encourage him to do so.”

Police are also appealing to anyone else who was in or near Camden High Street around the time of the incident and may have seen anything suspicious to come forward.

Witnesses can call 101 and providing the reference 01/7057429/26.
