Police appeal for help to identify skeletal remains found in Victoria's Dandenong Ranges in 2006

Victoria Police has released facial reconstruction images based on scans of skeletal remains, as they appeal for information to help identify a deceased man.

The man's remains were found in March, 2006, in Victoria's Yarra Ranges, at Ferny Creek near Mount Erin Road and Janesdall Avenue.

Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit's Leading Senior Constable Danielle Fleming said police hoped a member of the public would come forward with information.

"When a loved one goes missing, family and friends are thrust into an unimaginably emotional and frightening situation," she said.

In 2006, a forensic anthropologist examined the remains and found the deceased was a Caucasian male between 23 and 27 years old, who stood between 167 to 180 centimetres tall.

Decayed items of clothing were found with the remains, including parts of a purple scarf, pants and shoes.

The Coroner found in 2012 that the man had died of an unknown cause between February 1999 and December 2000.

Victoria Police said in a statement that the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine created the facial reconstructions because it had exhausted "all avenues of identification, including DNA and dental records."

Anyone able to provide information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or via its website.
