Woman found dead in bushland near Townsville likely knew her attacker, police say

Queensland police have taken a man into custody following investigations into the death of a 44-year-old woman, whose body was found in bushland near Townsville last night.

The 38-year-old Deeragun man was arrested around 8:30pm in Proserpine, 260 kilometres south of Townsville, and is currently assisting detectives in Mackay.

Detective Inspector Jason Shepherd said a group of teenagers riding quad bikes found the body just before 5pm on a sandy track in Bluewater, about 28 kilometres north-west of Townsville.

"Although I can't elaborate on the nature of the injuries or the cause of death at this stage, it's very obvious that it's a suspicious death," he said.

Police suspect the body had been there for less than a day and are treating it as a homicide investigation.

Officers from Townsville will travel to Mackay today to continue investigations.

They allege the 38-year-old man was travelling south on the Bruce Highway near Yarlboroo around 11:30am on Sunday when he pointed a shotgun at a passing motorist, allegedly firing one shot into the side of her vehicle.

The victim, who was not known to the man, was not physically harmed during the incident.

Detective Inspector Shepherd said police were keeping an open mind about possible suspects and if more than one person was involved.

"Early indications would suggest that she knew her attacker, so it doesn't appear to be a random attack on a stranger," he said.

"We are trying to track down the lady's movements over the past couple of weeks."

Residents and passing motorists who may have CCTV or dashcam footage showing the area around Jaloonda Street in Bluewater in the past 48 hours are being urged to assist police.

The body was found on a sandy track, about 150 metres from a road, near houses popular with people who fish in the nearby creek.

Police say they have been in touch with the woman's family, including her four children aged 14 to 24, who don't live in the area.

"Obviously you can imagine they'd be pretty traumatised by it," Detective Inspector Shepherd said.

Police say they haven't found a murder weapon, though they say a weapon was used.

Police initially said a fisherman had found the body but clarified that the teenagers made the discovery and one told his father, who contacted police.
