Police appeal for footage in fatal Brixton Academy crush investigation

Police have appealed for anyone with footage or photos of the deadly Brixton O2 Academy crowd crush to share it as the investigation continues.

Two people were killed and a third left critically injured after a crowd crush at an Asake gig in December.

Gaby Hutchinson, a 23-year-old security guard, and Rebecca Ikumelo, 33, a mother of two from Newham lost their lives amid the chaotic crowd surge.

Met Detective Superintendent Dave Kennett said officers needed footage to unlock why the tragic crowd crush happened.

“It is important that we know why the surge happened, for the families of those who never returned home, and for the safety of those who attend music events in the future,” he said.

“We need your help to establish what happened so that we can provide answers to the families and loved ones of those who were so seriously, or fatally injured.

“We know there were thousands of people there and that many will have seen what happened.

“If you were there please don’t ignore this plea – imagine the families who are struggling to come to terms with their loss and do the right thing, share what you saw with my team who are waiting to hear from you.”

Nigerian Afrobeats singer-songwriter Asake had been scheduled to perform on the evening of December 15 in the last of three shows in London that week.

The venue’s operating licence has been suspended as Metropolitan Police officers probe the fatal incident, including claims of lax security and concertgoers attempting to enter without tickets.

A number of people sustained serious injuries and were treated at the scene, with one 21-year-old woman still in hospital in a critical condition.
