POLICE investigating an assault against a woman in Newcastle West on Sunday have made a public appeal for help to find the man responsible.

Investigators were called in after a 22-year-old woman left a Hunter Street hotel shortly after 1am. Police said she was approached by an unknown man, who assaulted her on Wood Street before fleeing the area.

The man is described only as being aged in his early 20s, police said.

The woman reported the assault to Newcastle City Police District officers herself, sparking the investigation.

Detectives said they are eager to speak to anyone who may have information related to the assault, or who may have seen a man loitering in the Wood Street area around 1am.

Anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or report online at nsw.crimestoppers.com.au. Information will be treated in strict confidence, police said.

NSW Police said it was important that crime or tips not be reported to police via the force's official social media accounts.
