Police appeal after Volkswagen crashes into central reservation on M5 and people run away

Police are seeking witnesses after multiple people fled the scene of a crash on the M5.

The single-vehicle accident took place in the early hours of Monday, October 14, between J22 (Burnham-on-Sea) and J21 (Weston-super-Mare).

At around 12.42am, an orange three-door VW Polo collided with the central reservation of the carriageway.

The occupants then fled the vehicle before police officers arrived.

A man was arrested nearby afterwards and has since been released under investigation.

Avon and Somerset Constabulary says it wants to hear from anyone who saw how the orange Polo was being driven in the moments leading up to the collision or who saw people in the carriageway immediately afterwards.

A police spokesperson said: "If you can help, get in touch through www.avonandsomerset.police.uk/contact, or by calling 101, quoting reference 5219237547."
