Police appeal after reports of multiple cars damaged with hammer in Cookstown

Police are appealing for information after several cars were reportedly damaged by a man with a hammer in Cookstown on Sunday night.

Police received an initial report that a man had smashed the window of a car in the Coagh Street area of the Co Tyrone town around 9pm, before hitting the window of another car a short time later.

A further report was sent to police that around 10.25pm, a windscreen of a car on William Street had been smashed.

Extensive damage has been caused to the vehicles involved according to police, who have appealed for anyone who may have witnessed the incidents to come forward.

Sergeant McCartan said: “We received an initial report, just before 9pm, that a man had smashed the window of a car with a hammer. This was in the Coagh Street area of the town.

“He proceeded to walk on, hitting the window of the next parked car as he passed it, and heading in the direction of James Street.

“Just after 10.25pm, we received a further report. This time, the windscreen of a car parked on William Street had been smashed.

“We have a description of a man, who was sighted in the Coagh Street area at the time of the first report. He is described as being aged in his early 30s, with light-coloured hair, and around 5’ 8” in height. He was wearing dark clothing.

“Extensive damage has been caused to the vehicles; and I am appealing to anyone with information, or who may have captured dash cam footage, to contact us on 101. Please quote reference number 2057 of 12/12/21.”
