Police appeal after multiple reports of car being driven wrong way on M60 and M62

Police have launched an urgent appeal for information following a number of reports of a car being driven in the wrong direction on Greater Manchester's motorways.

Officers were first called to reports of a vehicle being driven the wrong way on the M62 near to junction 19 for Rochdale at around 12.15am today (October 20).

A similar call was made at around 1.05am - this time on the M60 near to junction 23 at Ashton-under-Lyne.

Police were scrambled to both incidents but despite extensive searches in both areas, they were unable to locate the vehicle.

Shortly after 2am, officers from Cheshire Police discovered a grey Audi S5 which was parked on the hard shoulder of the M56 near to junction 11 in Daresbury facing the wrong direction.

A 34-year-old man was located nearby and arrested.

The man, who is from the Welshampton area in Shropshire, is currently being questioned on suspicion of dangerous driving, resisting arrest and drug driving.

Police are now appealing for anyone who was driving on the listed roads last night who believe they may have witnessed any of these incidents, to get in touch.

Inspector Anton Sullivan from Cheshire Constabulary’s Roads and Crime Unit said: "Enquiries in relation to these incidents are ongoing and we are doing all we can to establish exactly what has happened.

"The M62, M60 and M56 are all busy roads and as part of our investigation we are keen to hear from anyone who was driving on these roads last night and believes they may have witnessed any of the incidents.

"The same goes for anyone with any dashcam footage which could assist our investigation."

Anyone with information is urged to call Cheshire Police on 101 quoting IML 1112482 or report it via https://www.cheshire.police.uk/ro/report/
