Police appeal after fire started in Old Kilpatrick yard causing "considerable damage"

Police have launched an appeal for information after a group of youths started a fire and vandalised a yard near the Erskine Bridge.

The incident took place on Monday night (July 12) at around 9.15pm in the yard at the rear of St Patrick's Church in Old Kilpatrick.

The yard was broken into and a mobile generator was removed and set alight along with scaffolding platforms and fencing. A number of youths, seven males and two females, were seen in the area - and officers are keen to speak to them.

They are described as aged between 15 and 17-years-old. They were mostly wearing dark clothing, including hoodies, tracksuits and shorts. One of the females was wearing a shiny puffa style jacket with a black hood.

Detective Constable Mark Gillies said: “This was a reckless act that caused a considerable amount of damage. It is lucky that no one was injured.

“We would like to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time of the incident and the youths who were seen in the area as we believe they can help with our enquiries.

“If you can help please contact us via 101, quoting incident 3507 of Monday, 12 July, or make a call anonymously to the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson added: “We were alerted at 8pm on Monday, July 12 to reports of a fire in the open near to a bridge at Old Kilpatrick.

“Operations Control mobilised one appliance and firefighters extinguished a fire affecting a portable generator.

“There were no reported casualties and crews left after ensuring the area was made safe.”
