Police 'appalled' as 'thousands' ignore warning and drive to beauty spot

Police have shared images of packed car parks and roads in Rivington, despite warnings for walkers to stay away this weekend.

Emergency services warned that people should avoid the beauty spot due to "treacherous conditions" and following a spate of people getting injured by slipping on ice.

However, it appears that the pleas fell on deaf ears as 'thousands' of cars apparently piled into the area from as far afield as Liverpool and Southport.

Sgt Harrison from Chorley Police said: "We are appalled and hugely disappointed with the blatant breaches of the Covid Rules and Regulations in the Rivington area today.

"The area is massively busy with thousands of vehicles visiting the area.

"We have conducted a sample of 25 PNC checks on cars in the area and our findings are that over 90pc of cars are from out of the area. Cars from as far as Liverpool, Sale, Southport, Radcliffe and Worsley are in the area.

"This is a blatant breach of Covid regulations which state that under the current restrictions you MUST NOT LEAVE YOUR HOME UNLESS YOU HAVE A REASONABLE EXCUSE. IF YOU NEED TO TRAVEL YOU SHOULD STAY LOCAL - MEANING AVOIDING TRAVELLING OUTSIDE OF YOUR VILLAGE, TOWN OR CITY WHERE YOU LIVE."

Sgt Harrison also said that fines will be 'forthcoming' if such breaches of coronavirus rules occur.

He added: "We are appealing to people to stick to the guidelines and use some common sense. We are in the midst of a national pandemic and gatherings of this nature will undoubtedly lead to a national rise in Covid Cases. Fines will be forthcoming this continues.

"We appreciate that Rivington is a beautiful area but it will be here for a long time after the virus has gone."
