Police anger after '5G tower fire' on busy Liverpool road

A video has been posted on social media which appears to show the scene after a 5G mobile phone tower was set on fire in south Liverpool.

The footage, posted on YouTube, showed the emergency services putting out the fire on Aigburth Road near the Tesco Metro at around 11pm last night.

The video was titled '5G Tower Fire in Liverpool'.

Police and the fire service were unable to confirm if the mobile phone telecommunications box was connected to 5G technology.

Firefighters were called to the scene and put out the blaze with CO2 extinguishers.

The incident appears to have happened at around the same time as a phone tower was set on fire in the Aintree area.

Emergency services were called to Spencer’s Lane, in Aintree, shortly before 11pm last night to reports that the mast was ablaze and could be seen from the motorway flyover.

Both fires happened hours after the Mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson said that bizarre rumours of a link between 5G towers and Coronavirus were entirely without any foundation.

A police spokesman said: "We can confirm an investigation is underway after a mobile phone telecommunications box was set on fire in Aigburth last night (Friday, 4 April)

Firefighters were called to reports of a fire just after 10pm on Aigburth Road near to Parkfield Road (by the Tesco Metro) and were able to quickly extinguish the fire.

A joint investigation by Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service and Merseyside Police is now underway."

DCI Steve Reardon said: "We are currently reviewing CCTV in the area to identify the offender. The actions of this person(s) are completely inconsiderate for the wider public when you think that now more than ever all members of the public are dependent on technology, including their phones and mobile phones, to keep in touch with loved ones.

"People may also need their phone lines to contact the emergency services when they are in need and stupidity like this could put someone’s life at risk. I would urge anyone who may have information which could help us with our inquiries to contact us."

Officers are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed anyone acting suspiciously just before the telecommunications box was set alight, or who has any information which could assist the investigation to DM @merpolcc, or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
