Police and firefighters tackle 'underground' blaze in west Leeds woodland

Police and fire crews rushed to attend an 'underground fire' in woodland on Sunday, July 21 after people living nearby spotted smoke rising from the trees.

The blaze was reported at around midday on Post Hill in west Leeds, prompting a quick response from West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service and West Yorkshire Police's specialist Off-Road Bike Team.

A spokesperson for WYFRS confirmed they were called to at 9:12am to reports of a fire in the Bramley area of Leeds and sent a crew from Stanningley to deal with the blaze.

The firefighters arrived to find a small fire burning two feet underground, which could have quickly spread across the area without fast action.

A Facebook post from the force said: "Today officers from the Leeds District Off-Road Bike Team were at Post Hill when they discovered a fire burning about 2ft underground with the potential to become out of control.

"The fire service were called. They agreed that it could have easily got out of control.

"A reminder to be responsible in woodland."
