Police and fire service launch joint investigation after spate of wildfires

A JOINT investigation has been launched following a series of wildfires which took place over the weekend.

Police Scotland confirmed it had launched the investigation with the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) following wildfires across the Highland and Moray regions.

The wildfires, which took place in the Carrbridge, Grantown-on-Spey, Dava and Upper Knockando areas, were reported to police at around 4.05pm on Saturday.

Emergency services attended the blazes and a number of roads were closed to keep the public safe.

Chief Inspector Mike MacKenzie, local area commander, said: “Fortunately no one has been injured but a large swathe of the countryside has been badly affected. I would like to thank all the emergency services and the public involved.

“Our enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances and this includes the area around Lochindorb between Carrbridge and Dava and the area around Loch Allan near Dava.

“We are asking anyone who saw anything suspicious or has any information that could assist with the investigation to get in touch.

“If you can help please contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting incident number 2281 of Saturday, 28 June, 2025, or make a call anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”

The National has contacted SFRS for comment.

On Tuesday, SFRS deputy assistant chief officer Ross Robison said: “The vast scale of these fires has been challenging for our crews over the past four days, particularly because of the strong winds that have caused the fires and smoke to spread further across the landscape.

“There has been a significant deployment of resources to the area, including on call and wholetime crews from Aberdeenshire, Moray and Highland who have been working effectively alongside landowners and partner agencies.

“I’d like to recognise the efforts of all firefighters who attended and particularly those who are on call and often combine this role with other jobs in the community. They continue to be invaluable in responding to incidents like these that impact hugely on rural areas.

"We've been supported by the use of helicopters provided by partners for water bombardment and we have deployed specialist wildfire teams and assets."
