Police and fire crews in Newport called to tackle a number of 'illegal bonfires'

Emergency services have warned the public after police and fire crews were called to tackle a number of "illegal bonfires" across Newport on Wednesday night.

Gwent Police tweeted that officers had been out across the city, working alongside crews from South Wales Fire and Rescue Service.

It comes as emergency services prepare for a busier Bonfire Night as usual, with planned events across Wales being cancelled and people planning their own firework displays and bonfires on private property.

As part of "Operation Bang", emergency services have warned people to refrain from starting fires in their gardens, and asked people to consider people who may be suffering with Covid-19 symptoms.

A spokesperson for South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: "On Wednesday, November 4, our crews attended a number of deliberate refuse fires within the Newport area.

"Bonfires can be a significant fire risk and we advise that residents refrain from having fires in their gardens, and be considerate of any neighbours with breathing conditions who may also be self-isolating with symptoms of Covid-19.

"We also do not advise anyone to burn garden or household waste. Please instead use your local authority waste, recycling and composting services or store it for when you can."

Head of fire crime and home safety with South Wales Fire and Rescue Service, Group Manager Paul Mason, said: “This time of year is always fun and we want to make sure that everyone can enjoy the celebrations safely.

"Our message is simple – be sensible and look after yourselves and each other so that you don’t require our services during your evening.

"We attend many unsupervised fires and injuries caused by fireworks and out of control bonfires.

"Fireworks and bonfires are a lot of fun but it’s very important to be cautious and to enjoy the celebrations responsibly.

"Acting irresponsibly around fires and fireworks can have devastating consequences, can cause life threatening injuries and can even cost lives.”
