Police and Crime Commissioner's plea: Stay indoors and save lives

As we approach the end of the Easter weekend – one that is very different to past Bank Holidays - I cannot stress enough how important it is that we stick to staying at home unless we are leaving for essential shopping, medical care or our daily exercise.

We know that this virus does not discriminate; Covid-19 is affecting the old and young, vulnerable and healthy. Recent news reports have included frontline doctors and nurses describing the horrendous symptoms found in the most serious of cases. Yet, despite these hard hitting reports and the recent increase in deaths, there are a small minority of people who are still finding excuses to go outside when it is not essential or necessary.

I know these rules are tough and unfair, not helped by this lovely sunshine. To many, it must feel like time has come to a standstill and boredom is starting to creep in. I cannot even imagine how relentless it must feel to those who do not have a garden or for those who have young children who are stuck inside. But, please remember, these challenges are temporary – we will get through this. Be in no doubt that the majority of you who are staying at home are helping to lessen the impact on the NHS and are saving lives.

Ashton Court (Dan Regan/BristolLive)

As ever, I want to say a massive thank you to all our heroes on the frontline of our public services and to our key workers who are doing a fantastic job. We need you now more than ever and please be assured that your hard work is truly recognised.

Finally, I want to reassure all victims of crime – especially survivors of domestic abuse – that Avon and Somerset Police and support services are still here to help you. Despite these uncertain times, we still want victims to come forward, speak out and be heard. Our locally commissioned victim services are working tirelessly to ensure the right help and support is still out there. Useful numbers include:

· Next Link: 0117 925 0680

· National Domestic Abuse Helpline: 0808 2000 247

· CrimeStoppers: 0800 555 1111

I also want to reach out to neighbours, friends and family members; if you think someone is a victim of domestic abuse, please speak up. You can contact the police, a support services or CrimeStoppers if you wish to report anonymously. We all need to be looking out for each other during these challenging times.

I wish you all a safe, healthy and happy Easter. Remember to stay home, save lives.
