Police and army descend on property after World War Two grenade discovered

A row of shops was cordoned off after police were made aware of a World War Two grenade.

Officers were called to Garston after a member of the public brought the unexploded device to the attention of police this afternoon.

A parade of shops and flats on St Mary’s Road was cordoned off in response.

Officers stood watch over the protected area, which lay between Garston Old Road and Ranfurly Road.

Members of the force’s anti-gun and gang crime Matrix unit were among those present.

The grenade was located in a property and was not thought to be viable.

However, that is yet to be confirmed by army bomb disposal experts, who also attended the scene.

The police cordon was taken down at around 8.15pm.

Liverpool was bombed heavily in the Blitz , and many unexploded devices have been discovered in the decades past.

Concerned residents in Formby recently claimed that two unexploded bombs remain on a site earmarked for development .

And during building works in 2016, seven unexploded World War II bombs were found in just two days .
