Police and ambulance attend medical incident on city centre roundabout

Commuters faced long delays this evening after a 'medical incident' closed a vital roundabout in the city centre.

Emergency crews were called at around 3:30pm today (Wednesday) to Old Market roundabout , and the route was shut for around an hour and half.

All lanes were re-opened by 4:55pm but lengthy queues remained throughout rush hour.

What happened?

Information from the emergency services has so far been quite minimal.

South Western Ambulance Service confirmed paramedics and a Hazardous Area Response Team attended but did not divulge the severity of the incident.

And a spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police said officers assisted with traffic control.

What the ambulance service say

A spokesperson said: “We were called to this incident at 15:18.

“We allocated various resources including road ambulances and our Hazardous Area Response Team.”

What police say

A spokesperson said: “Police were called to Lower Castle Street, Bristol, just before 3.30pm to assist the ambulance service by carrying out traffic control while ambulance crews deal with a medical incident in the road.”
