Police allege man had six drugs in system after being caught on NT highway

A 43-year-old man was found allegedly with six prohibited substances in his system when he was pulled up on a remote highway in the Northern Territory on Tuesday morning.

It was 11:45am when the man, who NT Police said was driving a "heavy vehicle", was pulled up on the Victoria Highway.

NT Police said the man had been driving from Western Australia to the Northern Territory and was stopped at a border control checkpoint.

He was then tested for drugs and taken to a mobile police station for a secondary drug test.

The man allegedly returned positive results for cocaine, benzodiazepine, opiates, THC, amphetamines and methamphetamines.

An NT Police spokesperson said the driver received an infringement of $400 and has been suspended from driving for a 24-hour period.

Acting Superintendent Craig Garland said it was disappointing to see that individuals would put their lives and the lives of others at risk during this time.

"The NT Police have maintained a road policing presence during the pandemic and the community can expect this to continue on NT roads as the restrictions ease," he said.
