Police and defence force personnel will have a 24-hour presence at Canberra's quarantine hotel when the first international passengers arrive on Thursday.

About 150 returning Australians will arrive in the ACT from Singapore, as one of two expected repatriation flights expected before Christmas.

ACT Policing Detective Superintendent Matthew Heather said defence and police officers would secure the hotel perimeter and foyer 24 hours a day.

"As part of our arrangements we've reached out and support of the Australian Defence Force and we'll be maintaining a 24-hour presence at the location, just to make sure the residents are all safe, doing compliance checks and generally ensuring people are complying with directions," he told ABC Radio Canberra.

He said officers had undergone training with ACT Health and will have symptoms monitored regularly throughout the 14-day quarantine.

"We'll be following that advice to the letter," Detective Superintendent Heather said.

Contact with passengers will be done primarily over the phone to check in on their welfare.

"Passengers will be given directions in terms of what they need to do when they quarantine. Our job is to make sure they comply with that," Detective Superintendent Heather said.

"Practically it means we'll be on shift with members of the ADF and conducting regular and daily checks on visitors."

The ACT government says it will not release the name of the hotel to be used for quarantine.
