CHICAGO _ More than 50 people accused of "fueling Chicago violence" were arrested in a series of police sweeps across Chicago's Harrison and Deering police districts in the week leading up to Halloween night, Chicago police said.
Police arrested 52 people while serving search warrants and during raids beginning Saturday and ending late Wednesday, Chicago police announced Wednesday night.
Police seized 20 guns, two cars, $80,000 in cash and more than 1.5 pounds of drugs including cannabis, heroin, crack and 50 prescription pills with the help of agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, authorities said.
Seven of those arrested on drug and weapon violations were previously convicted felons, police said. Formal charges are pending, but U.S. Attorney John Lausch said four of the people arrested will likely face federal prosecution.
